More progress made after Amory tornado

Baseball and softball teams at Amory High School have been playing away games since the 2023 tornado destroyed their fields. However, significant progress has been made toward again allowing those teams to play their games at home.

Construction started earlier this year on new facilities at the original location of those ballfields — construction that was delayed because the city had to wait on federal approval so it could transfer the property to the school district.

The Monroe Journal reported earlier this month work on those ballfields is on schedule,

Baseball and softball seasons for the Panthers will start in February.

Meanwhile, something else will come out of the ground not far from the high school.

A fence now surrounds the property on Highway 25 where the Amory National Guard Armory once stood before the tornado destroyed it.

It appears work has started on the site where the National Guard has plans for its new home to be built.

That home is now being referred to as a readiness center instead of an armory, a move the military made with its facilities several years ago.

Big news in SEC baseball

Kate Luffman/Tennessee Athletics

From ESPN’s Pete Thamel: Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello is finalizing a deal to become the next manager of the San Francisco Giants, sources tell me and ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Vitello, 47, will be the first ever to jump from college coach to MLB manager without any professional experience.

Win to stay in

With Mississippi State eliminated (and announcing a new coach afterward), that leaves the Rebels and the Golden Eagles needing wins today to advance to the Super Regionals. A loss ends the season.

CORRECTION: Updated TV assignments for each game. NCAA did not have that information this morning.

No room to lose

At this point, the Bulldogs, Rebels and Golden Eagles must win the rest of the way to advance to the Super Regionals. That’s not only two today but one tomorrow. Only one game today for Mississippi teams gets regular television treatment while the rest of the games will be streamed.

Time to play the games

7:15 p.m. update: Mississippi State is now scheduled to start play at 8:05 p.m.

6:23 p.m. update: Southern Miss won’t start until 7:06 p.m. Mississippi State won’t start until at least 8:30 p.m. since the first game in the Tallahassee Regional is still ongoing after a couple of weather delays.

4:05 p.m. update: Game one of the Tallahassee Regional is in a rain delay, which could push back State’s game past 6:30 p.m.
